Prevalence of complicated carotid atherosclerotic plaques ispilateral to ischemic cryptogenic stroke using high-resolution mri

چکیده
Introduction Although distinct pathogenetic mechanisms for ischemic stroke have long been recognized, a definite or even probable etiology can not be established in about one third of all patients (“cryptogenic strokes”). Recent studies have shown that high-resolution carotid MRI is able to identify complicated American Heart Association lesion type VI (AHA-LT6) with hemorrhage, thrombus or rupture of the fibrous cap with good correlation to histopathology. Purpose The purpose of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of AHA-LT6 in carotid arteries of subjects with cryptogenic stroke.

The carotid plaque imaging in acute stroke (CAPIAS) study: protocol and initial baseline data
BACKGROUND In up to 30% of patients with ischemic stroke no definite etiology can be established. A significant proportion of cryptogenic stroke cases may be due to non-stenosing atherosclerotic plaques or low grade carotid artery stenosis not fulfilling common criteria for atherothrombotic stroke. The aim of the CAPIAS study is to determine the frequency, characteristics, clinical and radiolog...
متن کاملHigh-resolution MR Imaging of Carotid Atherosclerotic Plaques
High-resolution carotid MRI allows visualization of carotid atherosclerotic plaque characteristics. MRI serves as a noninvasive option for the detection of active plaque inflammation and intraplaque hemorrhage. Significant gains in signal-tonoise ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio can be obtained for carotid atheroma imaging at 3T compared with 1.5T. Normalized wall index or wall area on MRI has...
متن کاملChinese Atherosclerosis Risk Evaluation (CARE II) study: a novel cross-sectional, multicentre study of the prevalence of high-risk atherosclerotic carotid plaque in Chinese patients with ischaemic cerebrovascular events—design and rationale
BACKGROUND Carotid atherosclerotic plaque is identified as one of the main sources of ischaemic stroke. However, the prevalence of carotid high-risk atherosclerotic plaque in Chinese patients with ischaemic cerebrovascular events has been inconsistently reported and needs to be investigated in a large population. OBJECTIVES The primary objective of CARE II study was to determine the prevalenc...
متن کاملMagnetic Resonance Angiography Detection of Abnormal Carotid Artery Plaque in Patients With Cryptogenic Stroke
BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance imaging of carotid plaque can aid in stroke risk stratification in patients with carotid stenosis. However, the prevalence of complicated carotid plaque in patients with cryptogenic stroke is uncertain, especially as assessed by plaque imaging techniques routinely included in acute stroke magnetic resonance imaging protocols. We assessed whether the magnetic resona...
متن کاملAtherosclerotic plaque in the left carotid artery is more vulnerable than in the right.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Ischemic stroke is more often diagnosed in the left hemisphere than in the right. It is unknown whether this asymmetrical prevalence relates to differences in carotid atherosclerosis. We compared atherosclerotic plaque prevalence, severity, and composition between left and right carotid arteries. METHODS In a population-based cohort, carotid MRI scanning was performed i...
